5 mistakes you want to avoid in your personal branding photo shoot

You’ve made the decision: it’s time to truly show up – for yourself and for your brand. No more blurry profile photos, no outdated images on your website, but real photos that capture who you are. Photos that tell your story and communicate your brand values – professionally, stylishly, and authentically. But then comes the big question: how do you prepare for a branding shoot? And perhaps even more important – what are the pitfalls you’ll want to avoid?

At Atelier Oost Amsterdam, we’ve welcomed countless entrepreneurs, makers and creatives into our natural light studios over the years. That means we’ve built up a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to helping you get the most out of your branding shoot.

Let us help you avoid the most common mistakes – and, more importantly, show you how to step in front of the camera with confidence and style.

1. You try to be someone else in the photos
You’ve probably seen branding photos of others and thought, “Ah, so that’s how it should be done.” Suddenly you’re copying their poses, outfits, vibe. But guess what? You end up with photos that might look great – but don’t reflect you. Branding photography only really works when you show up with your own energy. Our tip? Come exactly as you are. A good photographer will guide you gently, with styling tips and a relaxed atmosphere that helps you feel at ease. You don’t need to perform or play a role.

Take time beforehand – possibly together with your photographer and/or stylist – to figure out what you want to communicate. Create a moodboard and collect visuals that inspire you. Then decide how to give it your own authentic twist.

2. You wear outfits that don’t match your brand
Your favourite dress isn’t always the best choice. Clothing is a powerful extension of your brand – it speaks volumes without saying a word. Wearing a super formal outfit while you're a down-to-earth coach? Or something too casual when you’re offering high-end services? Consider colour, texture, fabric and style. What do you want your look to say? What do you want your look to say? Have a look at your moodboard and, if needed, consult a professional to help translate your vision into suitable outfits.

Good to know: Our studios are styled in soft neutrals, unique textures and lots of natural materials – the perfect backdrop for your story. Think luxurious woods, textured walls, bouclé fabrics, and airy, sheer curtains. Interesting details that gently draw attention to you.

3. You forget to bring personal elements
Props bring your photos to life – they make them personal and unique. Think: your favourite notebook, a camera, your laptop, handmade art, handwritten notes, or that coffee cup you use every morning. What tells the story of how you work, live, and create? Without props, you risk ending up with generic images. With props, we create atmosphere and context – which is so valuable, especially on platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. At Atelier Oost Amsterdam, we’ve got plenty of beautiful design objects, vintage furniture and unique accessories for you to combine with your own items. Mix and match for maximum impact.

4. You arrive flustered and unprepared
A branding shoot is so much more than “just taking a few nice pictures.” See it as an investment in your brand – and a moment for yourself.

Here are a few of our top tips:
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Prepare your breakfast or lunch in advance: we’ve got great recommendations for local food spots.
- Speak with your photographer beforehand – either meet in person or have a quick call to make sure there’s a good connection.
- Lay out your outfits ahead of time.
- Practise a few poses or expressions in the mirror.

And trust your creative team – and our spacious, light-filled studios. Designed to help you relax, breathe and truly enjoy the moment. No rush, no pressure – just pure focus on you.

5. You focus too much on ‘pretty pictures’ – and forget your story
We get it – you want beautiful images for your website. But branding photography is about more than just looking good. It’s about connection. Recognition. Creating that feeling where someone sees one photo and thinks, “I want to work with them.” So allow your personality to shine through. That eyes-closed smile. A playful glance. A close-up of your hands creating something. That spark in your eye when you talk about your brand’s mission. That’s what truly resonates with people.
