Mika is 34 and has a background as a freelance stylist for commercials. Outside of work, she loves to create – she makes collages, reads avidly, and draws inspiration from art, conversations, and the city around her. Her creative energy seeps into everything she does, both inside and outside the studio.

From Instagram post to dream job
Mika’s path to Atelier Oost Amsterdam didn’t begin with a carefully laid-out career plan, but rather with a spontaneous Instagram post. I, Roos – founder of the studios – had shared that I was looking for a new studio manager. As luck would have it, Mika is good friends with one of our hosts, Perzia, and she immediately gave her a ring. Mika: “She said excitedly, ‘This is so you!’ And I felt the same. I’d always wanted to work in a photo studio, so when I got the job, I was over the moon.”
That spontaneity and genuine connection not only describe Mika’s journey to the studio but also her way of working. What drives her is not just a love for the job but also the people behind it. “I draw so much inspiration from the professionals who come here. Everyone has their own style, ideas, and rhythm. It keeps me curious and on my toes.”
How a shoot day starts: with music and a welcoming atmosphere
Mika’s workdays usually begin early. While the city is still cloaked in silence, she opens the studio doors and ensures everything is in place. But it’s never just a matter of switching on the lights—every detail counts. The smell of fresh (oat) cappuccinos fills the air, a soft playlist sets the tone, and there’s always a little treat waiting on the table. “I think it’s important that the space immediately feels pleasant—not just aesthetically, but in terms of energy, too. Music plays a huge role in that.”
After welcoming the client, there’s often a short tour where Mika answers any questions. She then stays available in the background, while handling emails, processing new bookings, checking everything’s tidy, and taking care of practical tasks like updating props or cleaning the walls. All with one goal in mind: making sure every client feels at home and can create without stress.

Her personal favourite space in the studio? That’s undoubtedly The Livingroom. “It’s our smallest room, but that’s exactly what makes it so atmospheric. Everything about it is just right: the colours, the furniture, the natural light. It feels like a real living room—ideal for shoots that need warmth and character. Did you know we’ve created a stylish Seventies look in there? The wooden panelled wall, the brown palette combined with chrome and silver, and the vintage furniture make it perfect for a retro-chic shoot.”
