Why organise a family shoot?

Family shoots are perfect for capturing your family's emotional family bond. In this type of images, you will see real moments and intimate interaction between loved ones and their children. Each photo tells a story and offers a wonderful memento of a beautiful period in your lives. After all, children grow so fast already, and how often do we hear from parents that they regret not taking more beautiful photos?

In addition, family photography makes a wonderful gift. You can treat a couple in your area by gifting them a shoot for their birthday or anniversary, for example. Or maybe you are a couple with children yourself, and would like to surprise grandparents with beautiful photos. It's all possible!

Family photography expert Jennifer de Vos tells

Jennifer de Vos is an absolute expert on family photography and maternity shoots. She is always ready to translate your story into breathtakingly beautiful images that will last for generations. She is the person who creates timeless memories with her photography. In the year 2023, she has already organised sixty mini shoots so far: perfect for getting acquainted with her work. The mini shoots are also useful for parents who are nervous about appearing in front of the camera, for example, or for anyone who would like to 'test shoot' first.

The photographer says: 'Through my Instagram stories, I regularly share that I organise mini shoots and this is how I bring this to the attention of potential clients. I always share beautiful examples to provide inspiration. When someone books with me, I send an e-mail with information about the date, time and location. I also give appropriate clothing tips, as well as the advice to always take care of your nails before a shoot!

Because Jennifer personal contact is so important to her, she attaches great importance to pre-applying with the booker(s). For example, she is happy to look over styling choices with you, and may have clothes of her own to borrow. Once your shoot is scheduled, Jennifer always advises you to arrive about ten to 15 minutes early. It's nice to get in the mood, find peace and quiet and change at your leisure.

Jennifer: 'During the shoot itself, I let the kids decide. They move and the parents move with them. Some older children you can direct a bit more, or give them assignments. I personally really enjoy going for not static but playful images'. She calls it a mini shoot, but often families still receive between sixty and eighty images. Parents get to choose the images themselves via an online gallery. 'Many people experience this as pleasant. The shoots don't take much time: ideal for kids with a short attention span. Besides, you don't have to worry about the weather. The light is always good, the location always cool. And I always keep in mind my signature style: calm, soft and warm'.

Here's how to make sure your family photo shoot goes smoothly

Atelier Oost Amsterdam's studios have hosted many wonderful family shoots. So what do you pay attention to when booking this type of shoot? This always starts with the right location. Photographers like Jennifer often offer suitable locations already, where you can trust that the atmosphere is good. A location should suit you as a family: it can be a nice studio, but also a park, beach, forest or even your own home. The setting should be comfortable for everyone. Both The Loft and The Playground at Atelier Oost Amsterdam are atmospheric, inviting and offer a warm and casual atmosphere: perfect as a backdrop for your family shoot.

Coordinate the family members' clothes in a way that suits the chosen location and make sure the colours complement each other. Avoid too bright patterns and busy prints as this can distract attention from the faces. We recommend choosing the right time for the photo shoot. The soft light during the golden hour, for example, just before sunset, makes for warm, flattering images.

Natural interactions for a personalised family shoot

Natural interactions between family members are the best. Let the children play and you adults relax: sometimes the best moments are the ones that arise spontaneously. When you book a shoot, always discuss your expectations with the photographer beforehand. Tell him or her about the specific shots you have in mind, or special requests. Open communication ensures better understanding and leads to personalised results.

By considering these tips, you can ensure that your family photo shoot is an enjoyable and memorable experience. Resulting in beautiful photos that reflect the unique characteristics of your family.
