A newborn shoot is a special experience, both for the parents and for you as the photographer. In this blog post, we share some expert tips to make your newborn shoot a great success. Because how special is it that you are the one who gets to capture such precious moments of a new family?

A personal and unique newborn photo shoot

Like any photo shoot, a newborn session starts with proper preparation. Make sure you consult well with the parents, and schedule a phone or video call. Try to get to know the parents and the family a little, in order to better capture their unique personality traits on film later on. At the same time, think about your signature style as a photographer, and create a combination between these two elements. Preferably, online or on paper, create a mood board that clearly shows your styles, possible poses and other inspiration.

Also discuss the family's outfits and try to make suggestions. Many newborn photographers own very cute props that they can use during the shoot. How about soft blankets, cute hats or small baskets, but also some styling pieces for the parents. Preferably choose calm earth tones and natural fabrics like cotton and linen, and try to avoid too busy prints or garish colours. Provide a playful element as well as a timeless look.

Organise a mini shoot day for newborn photography

Think about how long you want to shoot in advance, as a little one naturally has a short attention span. Perfect for this type of shoot is a so-called mini shoot day: such a day is organised by many different photographers. Here, you book a photo studio for a day (part) and set up different time slots. Often these last an hour. The client then gets a predetermined number of images of their choice, and additional single images can be purchased. This way, you can shoot different families for an entire day, and it is a fun way to introduce your client to a photo shoot in an approachable way. Especially since some people can find this very exciting.

Another great tip is the photo studio sharing with other photographers. Find some families who would like to model for an hour, and invite fellow photographers. That way you can share the cost of a studio, and everyone will have unique portfolio material afterwards.

The right newborn photo shoot location

The right location is key. Make sure the studio where your shoot takes place exudes calm and comfort. Always be there a little earlier so that you can take in the surroundings calmly and make them comfortable where necessary; it is advisable to turn up the heating. Think of some corners where the baby can lie down later, and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where the family feels comfortable. We want relaxed photos, of course!

In both The Loft and The Playground, you are always sure to get the most beautiful results from your newborn shoot. We have provided beautiful, neutral and muted colour palettes and large, high windows in which natural light magically accentuates your models. Our spaces are large, offer every creative opportunity and feature a wide collection of home accessories that will make a photo your own in no time. Tip: our photo studio in Amsterdam is also perfect for the aforementioned mini shoots.

Patience is key for a newborn photographer

When doing a photo shoot with a newborn baby, patience is key. Take the time to wait for that cute yawn, smile or hand movements. Let the baby set the pace and be ready to shoot those precious moments quickly. Newborn photography is all about the details. Preferably use a macro lens to capture these details razor-sharp, creating breathtaking close-ups.

In a baby shoot, it is important to embrace the little one's natural poses. Avoid forced poses and instead capture the interaction between the baby and his or her parents. Encourage parents to be relaxed and have lots of contact with their little one. Capture emotional moments, such as tenderness in their eyes and touches. These images will create cherishable memories forever.
