In conversation: interior platform LekkerWONEN at The Townhouse

The Townhouse is the Japandi inspired backdrop of the latest LekkerWONEN Binnenkijker: an inspiring series of YouTube videos revealing the homes of interior insiders. Should you not yet know LekkerWONEN: on this online living platform you will find the finest interior design ideas; from metamorphoses to DIYs and from unique styling tips to fun behind-the-scenes images, a magazine and a shop. The enterprising ladies don't sit still! Both on their website and Instagram, I find it a treat to follow the duo for endless inspiration.

Evelyn and Sanne: familiar faces from the interior design world

Now you may be thinking: Evelyn and Sanne look familiar! That's right, because Evelyn was one of the faces of RTL for years, passionately presenting the coolest home decoration programmes. Sanne you may know from her platform Enstijl: here she works as an interior stylist, blogger, photographer and content creator. After the duo joined me in The Townhouse I naturally wanted to ask them a few questions myself! In this interview, Evelyn and Sanne tell you all about their platform and give you some good tips as an enterprising woman.

How did the idea for LekkerWONEN come about and what sets you apart from other interior platforms?
‘Evelyn first did Eigen Huis & Tuin: a fine interior design programme on TV. On the basis of that, she drew her great passion and love for interiors to online. LekkerWONEN was not active for a while, but now we are back. And what's more, Sanne also joins in; this actually went very organically’.

You both have unique and personal interior design styles. How do you keep these styles fresh and innovative in your own homes?
‘Sanne of course moves house quite often, so that automatically keeps it fresh and innovative. Evelyn has currently given her own house a huge makeover, so it automatically feels like a new house again’.

Sanne, your style combines influences from Marrakech and Ibiza. How do you translate these influences into the interiors you work on?
‘The interiors we work on are mainly very much based on the client's wishes. If these people don't want an Ibiza or Marrakech atmosphere at all, that's totally fine too, of course. I like that style, but not everyone does. So that's good advice for women who also want to do interior styling. It's good to clearly have your own signature style, but you also have to be able to let go of this for a client with a different vision’.

For your Binnenkijker, you were with me at The Townhouse. Our hidden gem in Amsterdam, and most exclusive studio. What feeling did this space evoke in you? How did you experience The Townhouse?
‘Both of us were particularly impressed. Indeed, The Townhouse is a perfect oasis of minimalism and tranquillity: very different from our own chaotic, sometimes even cluttered households. We have so much more junk ourselves, even in plain sight. You got rid of all this incredibly stylishly. It was very inspiring and educational to see this, for both of us'.

Do you have any tips for entrepreneurial women who would also like a career in interior design?
‘Our biggest tip still remains: just get started and put in the hours. For us, it has always been a feeling-based process, and a large part of it cannot be taught. So get started with your passion and don't be afraid!’
Which projects or moments for LekkerWONEN are you most proud of, and why? Has anything in particular caught your eye?
'We recently had the honour of realising an awesome project in Ibiza for Wendy van Dijk. The aim: to give her finca a makeover. What's special about this is that we didn't know each other very well before this project. However, we had met a few times and both of us immediately felt a click. At one point, Evelyn simply asked: ‘I'm going to Ibiza next week, will you come along?’, and so it happened’.

‘Our time in Ibiza was amazing. Around midnight, I (Sanne) arrived in a rented Fiat car, at a place on the island I had never been. And there stood Evelyn, who opened the gate for me. Immediately we spent the whole night chatting about all sorts of things, and a friendship and collaboration started’.
