In our daylight studio<\/a> , we recently welcomed Sharon Deken from DKN Interior Design<\/a> for a special photo shoot for furniture brand Skogen<\/a>. What followed was a refined interplay of Scandinavian design (we love it), thoughtful styling, and stunning daylight photography. We asked Sharon all about her work and passion, her experience with our photo studio, and her tips for aspiring stylists.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Interior styling with impact: why brand identity is the foundation<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSharon is an interior designer pur sang. From her studio in the heart of Haarlem, she creates interior designs, styling concepts, and bespoke furniture. For her, every project begins with one essential step: researching the client\u2019s brand identity. \"It\u2019s important to know who you're working with and what they represent,\"<\/i> she explains. \"That way I can assess whether there's a good stylistic match, and whether I\u2019m the right person to style the campaign shoot.\"<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A connection with Skogen<\/b>
The collaboration with Skogen came about \u2014 as often happens in the creative world \u2014 through mutual contacts. Sharon<\/a> was asked to style a shoot commissioned by Patrick, one of Skogen\u2019s founders. \"We clicked instantly and were both quite critical,\"<\/i> she laughs. \"Even during that first shoot, we saw areas for improvement. Not long after, Patrick told me they were developing a new furniture brand. That\u2019s when I got involved with Skogen.\"<\/i><\/p>

She developed storyboards, selected a location and model, and played an active role in shaping the visual translation of Skogen\u2019s philosophy. And that philosophy is clear: timeless design, pure craftsmanship, and the beauty of simplicity. \"What appealed to me were the organic shapes and the use of beautiful, neutral materials,\"<\/i> Sharon says. \"And the fact that it\u2019s a new Dutch interiors brand \u2014 I found that really special.\"<\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Storytelling through imagery: three rituals as the foundation<\/h2>\nTo powerfully convey the brand story, Sharon worked with three daily rituals: morning, afternoon, and evening. \"In the images, you see the model at different moments throughout the day \u2014 from a morning coffee to a peaceful evening pause,\"<\/i> she explains. The shoot took place here at The Playground, guided by photographer Laura Emma van Geest. The result? Intimate, serene images that perfectly reflect Skogen\u2019s calm, Scandinavian signature. \"The accessories<\/a> supported the function of the furniture without distracting from it. Everything was spot-on from A to Z.\"<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\nFor Sharon, a successful shoot hinges on thorough preparation and clear communication. \"It\u2019s important that you complement each other and really listen,\"<\/i> she says. \"I always leave room for small adjustments \u2014 they can make all the difference.\"<\/i>

\nGot a shoot with a creative team coming up, but still looking for an inspiring location? Sharon recommends Atelier Oost Amsterdam. \"Absolutely go for it! I\u2019ve worked in two of the three studios \u2014 The Loft and The Playground. The spaces are bright, versatile and photogenic. There are props available, and the homely feeling \u2014 walking around in slippers \u2014 makes you feel at ease right away.\"<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Tips for aspiring interior stylists<\/h2>\n\nFor anyone dreaming of a career in interior styling, Sharon has some practical advice: \u201cMake sure you're visible and don\u2019t be afraid to make mistakes. You learn the most from when things don\u2019t go as planned. Social media, especially Instagram, is a great tool for showing your work.\"<\/i>\nFinally, we asked how she keeps herself inspired in a fast-evolving interior world.\n\"I keep feeding myself creatively \u2014 by visiting trade shows, attending lectures, and following pioneering brands and designers. The inspiration I gain often finds its way into my styling and design work. It keeps me sharp and innovative.\"<\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
