Passion for people and interiors: the power behind Marlies' styling
'Marlies, first of all. To us, of course, you are no stranger, but to our readers you may still be. Tell us briefly who you are and how you got into the business. Of course, we are also very curious about which media you stylise for.
'Interior design and image creation have been a great passion of mine all my life. As a child, I converted my room into a photo studio and was already very interested in interior design magazines. After training as an interior stylist, I got a job at the magazine Ariadne at Home. After working there for ten years, I started my own company. I have now been working for many different clients for nine years. I work as a stylist for brands such as VT Wonen, Libelle, Yumeko, Little Dreamers, Intratuin, Sanetta’.
'What made you choose interior design and styling?'
'Actually, that makes perfect sense: I love people and interiors. The interior tells the story about the person who lives there. Does a person travel a lot, does he or she like art, does he or she like colour? Give me a few ingredients and I will make a beautiful whole. But with tranquillity and sophistication, please.
A touch of vintage
'Where do you get the inspiration for your work?'
'Actually anywhere and everywhere. This can be on the street, during a holiday, in magazines and, of course, online. From some clients I receive a mood board, sometimes with just a single image. And from here I then put together an entire production'.
'How do you ensure that your work has the typical 'Marlies signature'? Where can this be recognised in it?'
I am a vintage enthusiast, a treasure hunter. In my work, you will almost always find a 'touch of vintage'. This could be a beautiful old book, an object or a unique piece of crockery'.
'Finally, can you tell us why you enjoy working in the studios of Atelier Oost Amsterdam so much?'
'I really enjoy working in Atelier East's studios. It's a wonderful base! The combination of space, colours, windows and furniture is very good. The studios In addition, have more than enough space allowing you to work on several sets at the same time. A no brainer for any stylist'.
